Favourite Untapable, expertly piloted by Napravnik, took the honours in the feature race, the $2 million Distaff, with a commanding performance down the stretch but Close Hatches, a 3-1 choice, faded badly to finish last in a field of 11. ...

He finished 1-2 in the $1 million Juvenile Turf with Hootenanny beating Luck of the Kitten by three-quarters of a length. Two races later, Ward's Sunset Glow finished second to Lady Eli in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf, completing a lucrative haul for a trainer thousands of miles away.

Napravnik stunned a crowd of 37,205 at Santa Anita and a national television audience by announcing she will retire Sunday. ''I don't know if I had won on another horse if I would have said anything,'' Napravnik said. ''This filly has just been very special to me, and it's a very special way to go out, so I just couldn't resist because they asked me how much it meant to me.'' Napravnik became the first female jockey to win the Distaff in the race's 31-year history.

Jim Rome co-owns Breeders' Cup Classic favorite (The Associated Press)

Jim Rome is a softie as a horse owner. ''I've been lucky,'' Rome said in a phone interview this week. Plus, he was simply ''pushing buttons,'' a specialty for a guy who still may be most famous for a decades-old confrontation with former NFL quarterback Jim Everett. After Rome repeatedly called him ''Chris'' - in reference to women's tennis star Chris Evert - on a live broadcast in 1994, Everett flipped over a table and knocked Rome out of his seat.

''This is as good as she's been and I feel really good because she's run some strong races this year.'' Napravnik has just one Breeders' Cup victory in her career, winning the Juvenile two years ago with Shanghai Bobby.

''The knee was completely shot.''
